Celebrate Bill of Rights Day
Here are a few ideas of how to incorporate Bill of Rights Day into your day. Pledge to read the Bill of Rights!
At school:
- Watch this video on the constitutional principle of the rule of law - Do you understand why the rule of law is important for maintaining free society? A short viewing guide is available to guide you through the content.
- FREE game resources for your SMART Board! Explore the history of the Bill of Rights and its protections including freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and due process, with an interactive Flash game! This new high-tech resources can be used with various presentation software and any computer/projector. Use for Bill of Rights Day, and every day!
- Download this “Life Without the Bill of Rights” story which asks readers to identify violations of the amendment within the story.
- Explore a fun, interactive click-and-explore activity that puts you in control and asks you to consider how life would change without some of our most cherished freedoms.
- Rank your rights! Working through this handout helps you think about which rights you value most and which amendment protects that right.
- FREE classroom lessons for middle school and high school students to teach them about the importance of the Bill of Rights and helps them answer the question “How does the Bill of Rights protect freedom?”
- Did You Know? Use this list of facts about the Bill of Rights in your classroom for a fun activity.
- Explore our Founding Documents Teacher Resource, 15 hand-selected resources about all the Founding documents, including the Bill of Rights.
- Show your support for our First Amendment rights: freedom of speech, religion and the press, freedom to assemble, freedom to petition the government. Students ages 14 to 22 are eligible to compete for one of 22 $5,000 scholarships in the “Free to Tweet” competition.
At work:
- Print out a pdf of the Bill of Rights and give 10 co-workers one amendment each. Gather together with some sparkling cider, read each amendment aloud, and then toast the Bill of Rights.
- Impress your co-workers with these trivia questions about the Bill of Rights.
- Test your knowledge of the Constitution and Bill of Rights with a 15 multiple-choice questions. All questions come from 4 categories; the Constitution, primary source documents, landmark Supreme Court cases, and historic people. Have fun – and remember to take the quiz more than once, each quiz has different questions!
At home:
- Focus on the First Amendment. What are some ways that you exercise some of these rights as a family? Do you attend a church or synagogue? Do you read a newspaper or watch television news? Do you belong to any civic organizations? Discuss why these freedoms matter.
